because: I've recently been using a new Mach2 12m after using a Mach1 12.1m for the last year. I was really happy with the Mach1, it was my most used kite, so it was going to be interesting to compare the two.

I have not used the Mach2 12m in as wide a range of conditions as the Mach1 yet but the kiting I've done shows some differences. First up the Mach2 has nine struts to inflate as well as the leading edge. This is no big deal as the struts are small diameter and some only take one pump. They all have good valves on them so pumping them up is fast. Just don't forget one as I did in one session. However it still flew OK, I didn't know I'd missed it until I landed. I usually use a rechargeable pump to inflate the leading edge to 90% and finish it off with the main pump and while the leading edge is inflating I do the struts. The whole deal only takes a couple of minutes so I don't really see the need for a single point inflation system as I actually do less physical pumping with my system. The leading edge has a decent dump valve now as well as a non return inflating valve.

The bar is similar to last years with the addition of a safety release on the chicken loop and fixed loop. I never had any problems with the bar last year so the safety fittings are welcome. The only change I make is to put some cable ties around the steering lines and winders so it doesn't tend to rotate in my hands. The lines offer the option of a centre line or back line safety leash attachment.

Once in the air the Mach2 feels similar to the Mach1. However after a few minutes of use the changes become apparent. It is a bit faster in the air and in turns which enhances it's performance especially in light winds. The speed also helps with jumps with the kite control during jumps enabling more height and the design of the kite, the 3 centre struts are of equal length, give the kite more hang time in the air. It boosts big fat air and feels smooth and easy.

The claimed light wind minimum of 10 knots is achievable with my 65kg weight but may require some sining to stay upwind. But you'd be better off with a 16m kite in such light wind. The high wind rating is given as 26 knots and I have had the kite out in these conditions in choppy water but with only 65kg to hold the kite down it was a pretty uncomfortable ride. With flat water it would be easier. But like the Mach1 the Mach2 has the massive wind range which was the reason I purchased F-One's in the first place. If you are a lightweight you'll find the Mach2 easier to handle in difficult winds, you have enough range to avoid getting spanked in the gusts. The flying characteristics are similar to the Mach1 with the kite flying off the front lines and steering forces being low. It's important not to choke the kite with too much back line tension. Too much back line tension will make the kite sluggish and in light winds can make it back down. The construction of the Mach2 is easily as strong as the Mach1 which I had no problems with after a whole years heavy use. The strut tips at the trailing edge are finished more tidily and covered with a tougher material. The strut and leading edge sewing method seems strong enough to enable high pressure inflation so that the whole kite is quite rigid. The fabric used seems tough and lightweight and the pigtails are a heavier diameter Spectra material compared to last seasons lightweight pigtails.

So if you have a Mach1 and want to move on to a better kite the Mach2 would be a good choice. If you are looking for a good 2003 kite no matter what you have now, you would also be happy with the Mach2. Try one if possible, I feel they are very much underrated.

Have fun, Dave (Dr Surf Australia ph: 02 4443 7665)
